Tax bills tweaked in Louisiana Senate committee to raise more money

A Louisiana Senate committee reworked a tax plan Wednesday (May 30) the House sent over and boosted the revenue it would generate by around $256 million, enough money to avoid looming budget cuts in the next budget cycle that starts July 1.

The overhauled plan still a ways to go in the legislative process, and even the architect of the proposal -- Sen. J.P. Morrell, D-New Orleans -- couldn't guarantee that the full Senate would go along with it. His strategy would increase taxes on businesses, and a House Republican leader said there is no way it will get approved by the lower chamber.
