New Orleans takes steps to require equal pay for women in city jobs

The New Orleans City Council took the first steps Thursday (Feb. 9) to create a law that ensures women in the public sector and those working on city projects are paid the same as men for the same work. Members approved the creation of the Equal Pay Advisory Committee, which will help set guiding principles for the council to follow as it creates an ordinance with that objective.

Councilman Jared Brossett, the lead sponsor of the ordinance creating the committee, said eliminating the wage gap between women and men is far more than a gender issue. It also touches their families, their quality of life, and their ability to plan for retirement.
