Saturday's election was an extraordinary occasion, at least in the New Orleans area. There were a lot of tax measures on the ballot in four area parishes, and not only did they all pass — they all passed by large margins.

In Orleans Parish, hefty fees or taxes for three neighborhood security and improvement districts were approved by between 95 and 99 percent of the voters in each one.

In Jefferson Parish, 63 percent of Harahan voters approved a new tax for police salaries, 60 percent of west bank voters agreed to a tax for strengthening the levees, and in Gretna, 64 percent of voters approved a sewer tax renewal and 58 percent OK'd a new tax for police pay.
