East Jefferson would get more full-time firefighters with proposed tax

A referendum on the April 29 ballot is asking some Jefferson Parish voters to approve a 25-mill property tax that would be used to hire firefighters to staff the four fire stations that make up the Third Volunteer Fire District. That proposal, which would fold the Third District into the East Bank Consolidated Fire District, has sparked rumors of closures and decreased fire protection.

The East Bank Consolidated Fire District covers most of Metairie and all of Old Jefferson and has a Class 1 rating, the highest possible rating given by the state's fire protection association.
