Why an Outside Bookkeeping Service Is a Good Idea.

Dec 21, 2011

I know that this may seem a little self-promoting, but I want to let you know the reasons as to why you should consider having an outside bookkeeping service, such as ours, handle your accounting needs. Here are some excuses you may be telling yourself that are keeping you from enjoying bookkeeping nirvana.

“I’m too small to need that.”
The fact that you are small makes it even more crucial for you to have us help you. When you come to us, we have the experiences of all our prior and existing customers to draw from and help you. We ourselves were also new at one time, and we know that there is a lot of “stuff” out there that you better get done or you’re not going to make it.

“It costs too much”
Really? How about starting prices of $195 per month or $495 per quarter? What is $195 per month? 9 meals at a fast food place, a typical cable bill, 2-3 meals at a family restaurant, a frappuccino a day..etc. We do not charge by the hour so you can budget your cost very easily. We do not increase our prices every six months or even yearly (in fact it’s been about three years since we’ve had an increase).
Of course, we are cheaper than having a full-time or even a part-time person in your office.

“I like to keep my business dealings private”
We are bound by strict client privacy laws, or else our license gets revoked. We are not going to lose our license for anyone. In fact, sometimes this angers clients because we will not release information without a signed written request (unless you come in person, of course). Your information is never shared with anyone. We do all our e-mailing, newsletters, blogs, etc, in house so that no one has access to your e-mail addresses, all our tax files are kept under lock and key, and your bookkeeping data is also secure behind locked doors.

“My wife (or husband, friend, father, neighbor, etc) is doing it for me”
Okay. Now we see why you’re reading this, then!! Actually, we would only recommend this scenario if that person actually has solid accounting training or background. Even then, we’ve seen many cases where the friend was in the accounting profession, but their “day job” duties always superseded your matters. Then the situation gets awkward because you don’t know how to bring up that a change may be in order. Many times, the friend was relieved when it was finally brought to light. Help yourself by letting us help you. We do not call in sick, make faces at you, or treat you with disrespect.

“I can do it myself—I took accounting in college, I’m good with numbers, etc”
Only you know this to be true. However, what you also know to be true is that there is only one you. You can’t be everything to the business. Sure, at first, you can keep up. Maybe even for a few years. You even bought the Quickbooks or Peachtree and are using it. However, in order for you to really focus on your business, you will eventually have to let that go. Why not trust it to someone who has been doing it for almost 30 years? Why not trust it to someone who has no hidden agendas and only has your prosperity in mind (remember if you go out of business—you can’t pay us!!).

In our office, whenever Mr. Larry gets a headache, he always jokes and asks, “do you want a headache?” I always reply, “If I could take it from you, I would.” In his case, I can’t really take his headache, but in yours, we can take your “bookkeeping headache” and make it all better.
