VSP warns of tax scam

CHATHAM, Va. — Within the last two days, the Virginia State Police has received calls from two state citizens and one from New York about Internal Revenue Service-impersonation telephone calls linked to a VSP Area 43 office in Chatham.

The VSP reports the scammers have cloned the agency’s main number — (434) 432-7287 — as a tactic to convince a caller they are legitimate. The VSP said that is a common ploy utilized by scammers as the annual IRS tax filing season comes to a close.

The IRS never calls to demand immediate payment using a specific method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally the IRS mails taxpayers notice of taxes due.
