Louisiana lawmakers hope to give teachers raises next year; how to pay for it remains uncertain

Louisiana lawmakers from both parties want to give public school teachers their first meaningful pay raise in a decade. But the big questions – how much, and how will it be paid for – won’t be easy to answer.

Gov. John Bel Edwards’ administration expects the improving economy to generate additional revenue for state government without any new taxes. His first spending priority is K-12 education, particularly raises for teachers and other school employees.
