IRS Missing Opportunities To Collect Delinquent Taxes: TIGTA

The United States Internal Revenue Service may be missing opportunities to collect delinquent taxes because it is not always completely researching cases before closing them as uncollectible, according to a new report released by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

If an IRS employee is unable to contact or unable to locate (UTC/UTL) a delinquent taxpayer, the collection case may be closed as currently not collectible (CNC). In the 2012 fiscal year, it was disclosed that the IRS closed more than 482,600 such cases, involving approximately USD 6.7bn in unpaid taxes.
