From Times Picayune's "The Answer Spot":
My husband and I got married at the end of the summer. Are there any steps we should take before filing our taxes in the spring?

There are a couple of housekeeping steps you should take that will smooth the way for your first tax filing after marriage.

First, be sure to report any name change to the Social Security Administration so that your name and Social Security number will match when your tax return is filed. You'll also want to notify the IRS and the Postal Service if you have a new address, and report any name and address changes to your employers so that you'll receive your W-2 when they're mailed out early next year.

It's also a good idea to use the IRS Withholding Calculator to determine the correct amount of withholding needed for your new filing status.

If you're uncertain about your new filing status, consult an accountant or tax preparer.
