While many shoppers will be heading to malls, big-box stores or visiting online retailers this weekend for the start of holiday gift buying season, the National Federation of Independent Business and American Express are once again encouraging buyers to visit mom-and-pop stores.

Small Business Saturday will be held this weekend for the seventh year in a row. The event promotes shopping at local stores the day after Black Friday. According to the NFIB, last year 95 million Americans shopped at small businesses on the day and spent more than $16 billion. That’s an increase of 14 percent over the 2014 totals.

Dawn Starns, NFIB state director, said small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all U.S. employers and provide jobs for 58 million people.
