I need to track down a copy of my 2001 tax return. Do you know how I can get a copy of it?

You can order a transcript of your returns for the past three years by phone or online. But since you want a copy of an earlier tax return, you must request it using Form 4506T-EZ, Short Form Request for Individual Tax Return Transcript. This and other forms can be downloaded at www.irs.gov or by calling the IRS at 800.829.3676.

There are two types of transcripts of tax returns. The tax return transcript shows most line items from your return as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules. It does not reflect any changes made after the return was filed.

A tax account transcript shows any later adjustments either you or the IRS made after the tax return was filed. This transcript also shows the basic data that you recorded on the return.

The IRS does not charge a fee for transcripts.
