Jobs for medical assistants are plentiful, and the expansion of a free training program to the River Parishes will bring them within reach of job seekers.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission and Ochsner Health System have partnered to offer a free four-month medical assistant training program to St. John, St. James and St. Charles parishes. It features accelerated classroom, clinical and on-the-job training. In addition to preparing certified medical assistants, it also points participants to additional careers in the medical industry.

"As the health care landscape continues to change, there is an ever-growing need for well-trained health care professionals," Missy Sparks, Ochsner's associate vice president of talent management, said in a statement.
