Louisiana residents will have an opportunity to stock up on flashlights, batteries, generators and other storm-related items sales tax free next weekend. The state's annual Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, which exempts a laundry list of storm items from the 4 percent state sales tax, will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27.

The holiday, now in its fifth year, is held each year on the last Saturday and Sunday of May and is timed to precede the June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season.

"This is the perfect opportunity to begin the preparations that can help to keep your loved ones and property safe, secure and comfortable during hurricane season," Secretary of Revenue Cynthia Bridges said. "I encourage everyone to get ready now. Don't wait until there's a storm bearing down on us or, worse, after one has already struck."

The sales tax holiday exempts the first $1,500 of the purchase price of each of these items: flashlights; portable radios, tarps; ground anchor systems; gas or diesel fuel tanks; batteries; cell-phone batteries and chargers; coolers; portable generators; storm shutters; carbon monoxide detectors; and blue ice.

Although the state sales tax is waived during the holiday, local sales taxes may apply.
