Ex-Angola officials charged with theft of $140K in rodeo, other funds for employee recreation

Two former high-ranking officials at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola who were accused by auditors of looting a fund aimed at improving recreational opportunities at the prison have been charged with felony theft of $1,500 or more by 20th Judicial District Attorney Sam D’Aquilla’s office.

Former Col. Shirley Whittington, 46, and Lt. Col. Deborah Leonard, 51, are due to be arraigned Dec. 15, D’Aquilla said. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $3,000.

Court documents filed Wednesday charging Whittington and Leonard contained no new information about their alleged crimes.
