After All These Years...LA Citizen's Credit Still Ambiguous to Some

Jan 12, 2012

We are still getting calls regarding the Citizen's Tax Credit.

Basically, the answer for the 2011 credit is: yes, you will get your credit if you bring us a copy of the homeowner's insurance policy that started in 2011. If you own business property or multiple properties, you get it for all your properties. You have to own property. If you are renting, you do not have a property insurance policy.

For those of you interested in reading more about the credit or filing for previous years, I've posted two ".doc" files in the "files" section of our website (look in "Tax Forms - LA" folder) that explain the whole refund application process for both individual and non-individual filers. In that same folder, you will also see the necessary forms for you to download and mail as well.

Please realize that if you gave us the copy of your homeowner's insurance policy when we prepared your tax return each year, you probably already got the credit and the State of Louisiana won't appreciate it if you send in a form asking for "seconds."

We recommend you check line 22 of your Louisiana tax return (the last 6-10 pages in your blue folder) to double-check whether or not you have already claimed it (look closely because some of you with multiple properties may have not have claimed the credit for ALL properties you own).

IF YOU HAVE A TOPIC IN MIND THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SEE ADDRESSED, POST IT ON THE COMMENT BOARD BELOW, OR SEND US AN E-MAIL. WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR BROAD CONTENT THAT PEOPLE MAY FIND HELPFUL AND YOUR SUGGESTION MAY BE THE TALK OF THE WEB NEXT TIME!!
